Advanced Concepts Workshop
Designers today face a range of complex challenges that require understanding and analyzing multiple systems simultaneously. The LANDAU team sees solutions to address the complexity of some of these problems by utilizing computational power as a tool in our designs and design approaches. For years computation has been used to accomplish many parametric tasks in architecture, such as building railings, furnishings, or facades. This workshop will provide a window into how the LANDAU team has been pushing the limits of computational design in ways that seek to utilize the power of the computation for the landscape.
The Advanced Concepts Workshop will focus on workflows and techniques to advance your knowledge of computational design. Grasshopper and Land Kit, when used effectively, offer a variety of ways to deal with site planning, complex analysis, design automation, and much more. Using custom tools and alternative Land Kit workflows, this workshop aims to equip you with specific examples/demos and showcase the possibilities of computational design to become an essential tool in our respective fields. These sessions will encourage you to follow along and engage in interactive demos as well as seeing how the LANDAU team has used computational power to automate design processes and leverage data.
Details
The workshop will span 5 hours, broken into two 2-hour sessions with an hour break separating them. The first section will focus on practical examples of Grasshopper and Land Kit tools being used to solve difficult challenges in a way that allows for quick iterative design. This first section will be more interactive, allowing the participants to follow along and participate in using the custom tools and workflows. The second segment of the workshop will focus on design automation and showcasing complex scripts and applications of Land Kit and custom Grasshopper workflows at various scales. This will include some interactive demos on automation as well as demonstrations of workflows and tools developed by the LANDAU team that open up future applications and possibilities for computational design and modeling.
Participants will be given exclusive access to presentation materials, live instructional demos, and interactive work time with direct assistance from our team. Many of the Land Kit features and functionality that will be used in this workshop are FREE. But, all participants will be provided with a 90-day Land Kit Pro license to explore Land Kit Pro features beyond the workshop.

Our Learning Objectives
This Advanced Concepts workshop is designed for users with an advanced knowledge of Rhino and Grasshopper, although new users are welcome to join to gain more knowledge of how computational design techniques can become an important approach to the design process. The primary goals of this workshop are to introduce participants to a wider range of applications for Land Kit in addition to the ways in which Grasshopper can be used to develop parametric workflows for accomplishing complex tasks quickly and accurately.
Participants will leave the workshop with a deeper understanding of how to utilize powerful computational design tools and workflows as well as methods for linking these techniques to your existing computational design workflows. Participants will explore techniques for:
Agroforestry - Alternative workflows and uses for Land Kit tools including using Plant Kit plants as proxies for other analyzing a site, using Paving Kit for facades.
Architectural Topography - layered Topo Kit workflows for coordinating multiple levels of floor and ceiling
Generative Tools - Design automation allowing for rapid iterative design development.
