Advanced Computational Planting Workshop
There are many challenges to executing a performance-driven planting design in the sort of time frames that most designers work within.
Water, Ecology, Biodiversity, Resilience, Succession, Green Infrastructure, Shade, Heat, and more
Even the best designs struggle to take every environmental factor and design decision into consideration, which is why the LANDAU team developed Land Kit’s planting tools. Using a rules based planting approach within a parametric modeling environment, Land Kit’s planting tools allow you to build workflows which integrate analysis, design decisions, and rapid iteration, all at once, to realize your planting design efficiently and effectively using conceptual plants or real life plant data!
The Advanced Computational Planting Workshop will build on the concepts learned in the Onboarding Workshop series to provide you the techniques for detailed planting design using Land Kit. Learn how to implement a rules-based planting approach using a variety of techniques that will take all of the relevant environmental and design factors into consideration. Get comfortable with customizing Grasshopper scripts to expand your Land Kit planting capabilities beyond the reach of the Land Kit Workflows. Follow along and begin mastering the wide range of planting tools available in Land Kit!
Details
This is a 3.5-hour workshop session is divided into two main segments. The first and shorter segment will focus on understanding how the tools work using our new and improved Planting Workflow. The second segment will dive into more advanced parametric design concepts, showcasing purpose-built tools to set up your planting layout, design, and documentation all within the Grasshopper scripting space.
Some knowledge of Grasshopper is encouraged for this workshop.
Participants will be given exclusive access to presentation materials, live instructional demos, and interactive work time with direct assistance from our team. The first portion of the workshop will utilize the Land Kit Workflows (which only work on Windows or in Parallels with a Mac). Additionally, we will be using Land Kit 2.0.3 or higher versions.
Instructors:
Chris Landau, LANDAU
Ben Summay, LANDAU
Cost:
$300 for Professionals
$100 for Students (with verification)
Our Learning Objectives:
First, gain an understanding of the updated Planting Workflow and then use that as a foundational understanding for beginning to explore scripting your own planting workflows in Grasshopper. Learn about the new clustering rules, micro-topo, image-based planting, and other techniques for defining the rules that guide the placement of your plants. Dive into parametric modeling tools in Grasshopper to show how the planting tools function and solve complex problems, while also learning how they connect together and build on each other. Benefit from the instructors’ experience to avoid common pitfalls and utilize tips and tricks that improve your efficiency with the planting tools as well as Land Kit.
General Topics
Constraint-based planting
Spacing, clustering, and companion planting relationships
Topo/Planting symbiosis (micro and macro grading)
Green Infrastructure
Forest Layers (Food Forests, anyone?)
Time
Land Kit’s planting tools place plants based on environmental factors that you choose.
Participants will leave the workshop with a deep understanding of Plant Kit as well as methods for linking these techniques to your existing computational design workflow. Participants will understand:
How plant can be used as blocks for documentation in CAD
How these plant blocks can translate to nodes in rendering software like Lumion
How to visualize growth over time and bloom over the course of the year.
How to use the plant schedule component
Topography and Planting go hand in hand
We hope you are eager to learn and to share in your enthusiasm for the future of planting design with us!
And if you are really excited, you can always get started with Land Kit today.
Hope to see you soon!!
